The HiPER+ consortium has signed agreement with the National Laboratory on High Power Laser and Physics at the Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics (SIOM) managed by the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
SIOM is the home of the Shenguang-II Upgrade (SG-II UP) high-power laser system located at SIOM (Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics), a research institute. SG-II UP facility integrates both nanosecond beamlines (up to 16 lines with a maximum total energy of 50 kJ) and picosecond pulses in the petawatt (PW) range. Together with the laser Omega of the University of Rochester in the United States, this facility is the world’s most advanced research infrastructure for the study of inertial confinement fusion designed for the direct-drive approach.
In addition to direct-drive ICF, the facility is currently used for studies on generation of Laser-driven High-Energy Proton Beams and Proton Radiography, High-Energy-Density Physics, Laser-Plasma Instabilities (LPI), Laboratory astrophysics, Extreme Transport Phenomena:
